The more you implement Smart Factory principles and networked production, the better process flow you have. When it comes to automation, don’t over-automate. Start small and keep it simple.

How do i decide to what level I should automate and apply Smart Factory principles?

Let's start with the easy part. Apply smart factory principles as they benefit all factories, for both big and small series. It's very simple. The more you implement the smart factory principles, the better the flow so you can optimise production. The other part is more difficult.

When it comes to the level of automation I think there are two rules: think before you start and keep it as simple as possible. ‘Think before you start’ means analyse your production and look for a solution that fits your needs. ‘Keep it as simple as possible’ means don't over-automate because the more you automate, the bigger the risk of problems, resulting in a less reliable system and a higher cost per part. So try to keep it as simple as possible, that’s the second rule.

I’d like to clarify, select the tower and the automation you need depending on how many materials you’re using. Take the automatic bending solution, that depends on your parts, whether it’s small or big. If you have a lot of tool changes then take the automatic tool changer. If you need to sort out a lot of parts at the punch press then choose an automatic pick and sort system. So that's the rule, that’s the advice I wanted to give.
