LVD – Sheet Supports – Why using the right sheet support units is so important.

The use of sheet supports on Press Brakes is an evolving area of press brake operation in today’s sheet metalworking shops. Before we speak more about sheet supports, we should look at the root cause of why companies need to use such units. The use of sheet support units is mainly driven by the need to reduce labour input, eliminate health and safety issues when bending large parts and the maintaining of consistent part quality. The use of such units helps prevent damage to large panel products with small flanges that would ‘break the back of the part’ if unsupported during the bending process. Historically most sheets support units being used have been of the pneumatic type where pneumatic cylinders and supports ‘follow’ the sheet during the bending operation by providing a ‘support’ underneath the sheet prior to, during and after the bending process. However their use has not been without its problems, when using the units the pneumatic cylinder pressure must be ‘balanced’ to the component sheet weight and this usually requires adjustment throughout during the day’s operation. Also during operation the unit’s movement sometimes can be quite harsh due to the movement of air pressure into the cylinders. The effectiveness of such units is subsequently really limited to the supporting of the sheet after the bend.

It was these characteristics and feedback from existing customers that encouraged the LVD engineering team to come up with a better solution. What was needed was a programmable sheet support unit that could overcome these issues and provide an automatically synchronised sheet support unit. LVD’s engineering team then went about developing such a solution. What resulted was LVD’s T-Axis CNC Sheet Support System, these units use synchronous brushless motors to provide a perfect following of the sheet, before, during and after the bending process, gently bringing down the sheet after bending is completed. The T-Axis units are fully synchronised with the bending speed of the press brake, providing very smooth operation. The T-Axis trajectories are calculated automatically depending upon the size of the V-die. The sheet is always totally supported during the bending by the synchronised action of the rotation movement and the vertical movement of the CNC support unit. LVD provides two types of T-Axis Sheet Support Systems one for machines from 80 tonnes to 220 tonnes able to support up to a 100Kg sheet for each unit and a heavy duty unit suitable for 320 tonne machine upwards able to support up to 200Kg per unit. Since the introduction of the T-Axis CNC Sheet Support Units LVD have seen a move towards these units. Whilst the cost of a CNC programmable sheet support system is not as low as a pneumatically operated system. Typically customers that are purchasing these systems are ones that have used pneumatic sheet support units before or knows someone that has, they understand the true benefits of such a synchronised system and can see past the initial higher investment cost.
